Jamie Edwards was allowed to make \u201ca star in a jar\u201d after promising his headteacher he would not \u201cblow up the school\u201d.<\/p>\n

He was inspired to build the reactor from scratch after reading about the achievement of the previous youngest \u201cfusioneer\u201d American Taylor Wilson, who was 14 when he set the record.<\/p>\n

Under the watchful eye of a team of experts in the school\u2019s laboratory, Jamie was thrilled when a Geiger counter \u2013 that measures radiation \u2013 this week confirmed that he had successfully smashed together two atoms to produce helium.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt is quite an achievement. It\u2019s magnificent really. I can\u2019t quite believe it \u2013 even though all my friends think I am mad.\u201d Jamie pleaded with headteacher Jim Hourigan for permission to carry out the experiment at the Priory Academy in Penwortham, near Preston, Lancs.<\/p>\n

He explained: \u201cOne day, I was looking on the internet for radiation or other aspects of nuclear energy and I came across Taylor Wilson and his reactor. I looked at it, thought \u2018that looks cool\u2019 and decided to have a go.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically I made a star in a jar. It\u2019s amazing really, quite a feat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jamie, with help from friend George Barker, set about trying to create the nuclear fusion reactor by contacting physicists but was left disappointed.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI went to various nuclear laboratories and universities and they didn\u2019t seem to take me seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

So he went to his headteacher and Jamie, who turns 14 on Sunday, said: \u201cI had to give a presentation and talk to him about safety, the benefits and what could go right or wrong. I needed \u00a32,000 and he said he would fund it and also put \u00a31,000 into a contingency fund so that myself and others could continue my work. I would like to make it energy efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relieved Mr Hourigan added: \u201cI was a bit stunned and I have to say a little nervous when Jamie suggested this but he reassured me he wouldn\u2019t blow the school up.\u201d<\/p>\n
