Garuda Indonesia eyes Komodo\u00a0Airport to expand business<\/p>\n

National flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia is the first company to submit a proposal to take over the management of one of the 10 non-commercial airports on offer from the Transportation Ministry.<\/p>\n

The ministry\u2019s airport director, Bambang Tjahyono, said that Garuda had submitted a written statement expressing their interest to manage Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, due to its tourism potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaruda also began direct flights to Labuan Bajo with ATR aircraft last year, [a move] that further fueled the company\u2019s motivation to take over the airport,\u201d Bambang told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n

In connection to Garuda\u2019s reported proposal, Pujobroto, the airline\u2019s vice president for
\ncommunications, said on Tuesday that he was unable to confirm if the airline would bid to manage the
\nairport.<\/p>\n

\u201cGaruda Indonesia is currently studying the possibility to manage [some of] those airports,\u201d Pujobroto said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see the airport management and aviation industries as one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garuda Indonesia president director Emirsyah Satar previously stated that the airline would choose an airport located in a city with potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will see the potential of the airport, but mostly we\u2019ll choose one that has tourism potential,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bambang said the ministry was currently preparing documents to firstly offer three non-commercial airports, including Komodo, on a tender.<\/p>\n

The other two airports are Radin Inten II in Bandar Lampung, Lampung, and Mutiara in Palu, Central Sulawesi.<\/p>\n

Bambang said that the first tender process would be ready in four months.<\/p>\n

In the following tender, the ministry would offer seven other non-commercial airports \u2014 Sentani in Papua; Juwata in Tarakan, North Kalimantan; Matahora in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi; Sultan Babullah in Ternate, Maluku; Tjilik Riwut in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan; Janandjoedin in Tanjung Pandan, Bangka Belitung; and Fatmawati Soekarno in Bengkulu.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe chose to offer airports that have arrivals of more than 500,000 passengers annually, with two-digit annual growth,\u201d Bambang said.<\/p>\n

Citing examples, he said Raden Inten II Airport currently served 22 flights per day with annual passengers of around 1 million, while annual passengers in both Palu and Labuan Bajo reached 800,000.<\/p>\n

Bambang said the ministry was offering private companies or other state-owned enterprises, besides state-run airport operators Angkasa Pura I and II, the opportunity to manage the airports, to help reduce the government\u2019s dependency on the state airport operators.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also have to give private firms a chance to boost competitiveness [in the airport management industry] so that Angkasa Pura would be encouraged to increase their level of service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bambang said that the ministry also aimed to save state budget with the tenders.<\/p>\n

The ministry\u2019s air transportation directorate general allocated Rp 5.6 trillion (US$495 million) this year to build and maintain the 178 non-commercial airports under its management.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, managed by Angkasa Pura II, was ranked the fourth most improved airport in the world in a 2014 survey conducted by global airline review and ranking consultants Skytrax.<\/p>\n

The survey was made by asking 12.85 million passengers from 110 different countries.<\/p>\n

Three Chinese Airports \u2014 Bao\u2019an in Shenzen, Xianyang in Xian and Shuangliu in Chengdu \u2014 occupied the top three positions in the survey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
