Dubai Municipality has announced that its plans to build a smart sustainable city called Desert Rose has been approved by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

According to officials, the Desert Rose project will include “diversified and simple sustainable housing areas” and will be linked to the Dubai Metro network.

Sustainable City

No specific details were disclosed but service facilities that produce renewable energy and facilities for recycling wastes and sewage water for irrigation and gardening will be included.

The city will be developed along green development principles, will feature “convenient and eco-friendly transportation” and will aim to reduce Dubai’s carbon footprint.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, said the project will be located in between the Al Ruwaya and Al Aweer areas across the Emirates road towards the desert.

“The urban planning of the project would be in the shape of a desert flower in different colours in sync with the desert environment as a symbol of sustainability. The project will incorporate the entire requirements of citizens under one roof of the proposed city,” Lootah said.

He added: “The city will adopt the sustainability standards in terms of economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects depending on the natural resources and renewable energy.”

Dubai Municipality has launched a competition for local college students to come up with innovative ideas and suggestions for the smart city, Lootah said.

Dawood Al Hajiri, director of planning department at Dubai Municipality, added that Desert Rose will include a city centre “that serves the economic, administrative and service activities which has an electronic train track connected with Dubai Metro”.

The project will also include a pedestrian path that will be air conditioned during the hot season, and a green belt that will be used for agricultural purposes.

It will not be Dubai’s first sustainable city project. Diamond Developers is currently building Sustainable City in Dubailand where the construction of the first 100 of 500 townhouses are due to be completed this year, with all residential buildings and the community centre built by 2015.

The AED1.1bn community will also include a school, a university, a planetarium, a country club and a community centre with retail and coffee shops.
