Toyota begins exporting Indonesia-made sedans to Middle East
Toyota Motor Corp. said March 26 that the automaker has started exporting Indonesia-produced Vios sedans to the Middle East for the first time.
Toyota’s vehicle production subsidiary in Indonesia, PT. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), officially marked the beginning of exports at a ceremony held in Jakarta on March 26, attended by M.S. Hidayat, Indonesia minister of industry, Muhammad Luthfi, Indonesia minister of trade, and Toyota executives.
Initially, a total of 1,000 units a month will be exported to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon and Yemen. The number will be increased to 3,000 units in the near future.
TMMIN started exporting Vios sedans to Singapore and Brunei Darussalam in December 2013.
In line with Toyota’s focus to grow in emerging markets and the robust growth in Indonesia’s automobile industry, annual production capacity in Indonesia increased to 250,000 vehicles this year from 110,000 vehicles in 2012. In addition to its multipurpose vehicle offerings, Innova and Fortuner, TMMIN now also produces the passenger cars Etios Valco and Vios, and Limo, a Vios-based taxi.
“Toyota considers Indonesia as a key global manufacturing and supply base. I am very proud that Toyota Indonesia is to begin exporting sedans to Middle East countries,” said Toyota Managing Officer Hiroyuki Fukui.
In 2013, more than 118,000 Toyota-brand completely built vehicles were exported from Indonesia–70 percent of all vehicle exports–to more than 70 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
