Second Kawasaki motorcycle plant in Indonesia starts production
Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. said its second motorbike factory in Indonesia started production April 8 to meet growing demand in the world’s third largest motorcycle market.
The new factory, operated by the Japanese company’s Indonesian subsidiary, PT. Kawasaki Motor Indonesia (KMI), and located in Bekasi, a suburb of Jakarta, can manufacture up to 150,000 motorcycles a year. Initially, only two models, the Ninja 250SL and the KLX 150, will be produced at the new facility.
Kawasaki Heavy’s first factory is located in Jakarta and started production in 1995. It has an annual production capacity of 100,000 units.
Subsidiary KMI aims to sell about 200,000 units in Indonesia in 2014. An increasing number of Indonesians are buying motorcycles for leisure purposes amid the economic development in the country in recent years.
